CORGI's primary remit from the Health & Safety Executive is to operate a register of gas installers. Only people with appropriate qualifications and skills are admitted to the register, and only those registered with CORGI are legally allowed to carry out gas installation and maintenance work.

CORGI is able to remove installers from its register for failing to meet the requirements of registration. Reasons for removal could include failure to allow a work inspection, failure to demonstrate competency and failure to remedy defects identified in work. These issues place doubts on the installer's competency to carry out safe gas work and therefore CORGI will remove the installer from the register so that they are no longer legally able to carry out gas work.

If CORGI become aware of installers that are not registered but are undertaking gas work illegally, we report this information to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). As a result, we report hundreds of illegal installers to the HSE every year, leading to many successful prosecutions and other enforcement action.
