CORGI Director Steve Bratt became a ‘celeb for the day’ recently, when he took to the airwaves to warn homeowners of the dangers of DIY-ing on gas appliances, when not properly qualified.
Steve spoke direct to 23 national and regional radio stations from the Ideal Home Show in London, as part of CORGI’s latest publicity campaign ‘Never DIY with gas’.
Launched in March to coincide with the seasonal upturn in interest in Do-It-Yourself in the Spring, the campaign came as a non-registered or ‘D-I-Y’ installer in Norwich pleaded guilty to manslaughter, after he incorrectly installed a gas fire, which led to the death of two teenagers from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Radio stations across the UK also highlighted the campaign during their hourly News Bulletins and coverage appeared in a range of websites and magazines spanning D-I-Y, self-build and lifestyle. Key local dailies including the Yorkshire Evening Post, Aberdeen Press & Journal and the Derby Evening Telegraph also dedicated editorial to the campaign.
CORGI CEO Mike Thompson said: “As an industry, we know gas is very safe fuel, but like any fossil fuel if it isn’t handled correctly it can prove dangerous. Working with gas is one project DIY-ers should leave to CORGI-registered professionals. The job of a gas installer should never be underestimated. It is a very highly skilled and technical role, which carries a huge weight of responsibility, not least in ensuring consumers and their families are kept a safe as possible.”
Research undertaken by CORGI to launch the campaign, showed the British public are becoming much better at recognising the importance of gas safety, with the majority of those asked (82 per cent) saying they would call in a CORGI registered installer for any gas work they needed doing.
However, the same research indicates there are still an alarming 800,000 UK homeowners who would attempt to fit a gas oven or fire themselves even though it could prove fatal if done incorrectly.
Mike continued: “This campaign has been hugely successful in terms of putting out the message to always use a CORGI registered installer, as well as raising awareness of gas safety generally”.
