CORGI ID card gets star support

Date: 16/04/02 Author: Saranne Postans

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly visited CORGI this week to support the launch of its ID card, which now contains information in braille.

“It’s really important for people to feel confident about the person they’re letting into their house,” said Lorraine. “They should always ask to see the card and, if they feel unsure, they should call the CORGI Customer Services department to check.

“It’s great that CORGI have added braille to the cards as it is often the most vulnerable groups in society such as the elderly, or those with some sort of disability, who are most at risk from bogus tradesmen. It would be good to see other companies and organisations taking similar initiatives,” she continued.

CORGI, the Council for Registered Gas Installers, first introduced the ID card in 1999 to help safeguard customers against bogus callers. The changes introduced this year have been made in response to feedback from both installers and consumers and CORGI will continue to improve the card in the future.

The inclusion of information in braille on the card means that those with a visual impairment are also able to check that the installer is registered and that he is able to carry out the work that they require. The card a unique serial number, the word CORGI and the telephone number for CORGI Customer Services which the customer can call to further verify the installer’s identity.

CORGI is the registration body for gas installers in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man and it is a legal requirement for businesses carrying out gas work to be registered. There are currently more than 44,000 registered businesses employing almost 100,000 operatives on the CORGI register. If you need to find a registered installer in your local area contact CORGI on 01256 372300 or log onto the website: www.corgi-gas.com
