At a recent fringe meeting at the Labour Party conference in Blackpool, politicians joined together to praise CORGI, the Council for Registered Gas Installers, for the work it is doing towards raising the public’s awareness of gas safety issues.
The meeting, entitled Safe as Houses? Protecting Consumers in the Home was opened and chaired by Jon Trickett, Member of Parliament for Hemsworth and Chair of the All Party Group for Gas Safety and featured guest speaker Tony McNulty MP, Minister in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
When questioned on the role of the regulator, Mr. McNulty told the meeting that he believed that ‘CORGI was doing a good job in getting the message about gas safety across.’ He added that campaigns such as the current Colin the Skunk campaign, which is aimed at students and presents a more approachable face to gas safety, were setting an example for other regulators to follow.
Jon Trickett added that, since forming the All-Party Gas Safety Group, he has been particularly impressed with the work CORGI is doing to improve and promote gas safety.
At the event Bob Henry, the CEO of CORGI, stressed CORGI’s commitment to continue to act as the champion of gas safety, as well as maintaining the register to high standards. He offered to share the expertise CORGI has developed in running registration schemes with other regulators, helping the Government ensure higher standards in public, social and private housing.
Samantha Heath GLA spoke about the contribution that regional government can make to tackling unfit housing and improving energy efficiency.
