CORGI leads debate on housing safety at Labour Party Conference

Date: 06/12/02 Author: Nicole perry

BILL Clinton was not the only new face in
Blackpool at this year’s Labour Party Conference.
CORGI Chief Executive Bob Henry joined
politicians, advisors, delegates – and the former President of the United States of America – at one of the major events of the political calendar.
For the first time, CORGI made its own
contribution to the policy debates, when it hosted a fringe event which looked at housing safety.
Safe as houses? looked at protecting consumers in the home, and focused on the Government’s commitment to improving housing safety, including
proposals to licence Houses in Multiple Occupation and register private landlords.
Speaking at the event, Tony McNulty, the
Minister for Housing, praised CORGI’s work in promoting the importance of gas safety. He highlighted the Colin the Skunk campaign as an example of best practice, which other watchdogs should follow.
Jon Trickett MP, the Chair of the All Party Gas Safety Group, added that he hoped CORGI would continue to engage in the debate on policy and raise awareness of the importance of using a registered installer – a comment echoed by
Samantha Heath, a member of the Greater London Assembly.
CORGI Chief Executive Bob Henry responded by confirming that CORGI will continue to be a proactive watchdog, campaigning to improve gas safety as well as maintaining the register of
competent installers.
