Renfrewshire Council has won a National Home Improvement Council award for innovation in the management of gas safety, sponsored by CORGI, with The East Riding of Yorkshire and London Borough of Newham named as runners-up.
The Innovation in the Management of Gas Safety Award is judged by a panel of NHIC members and was one of 12 announced at an awards ceremony on 25 November at the Gladstone Library in Whitehall, London. Nigel Griffiths MP, minister for construction, was guest of honour.
All finalists are CORGI registered, and both Renfrewshire Council and The East Riding of Yorkshire have achieved ‘CORGI Certification’ for high standards in the management of gas safety. However, entries were invited from any organisation with responsibility for the gas safety of others and the award was promoted to the gas industry as well as local authorities and housing associations. Entrants were asked to submit details of a project or initiative that they have undertaken to promote gas safety.
The entry from Renfrewshire Council showed that their management of gas safety goes beyond the legal requirements of a landlord, with CO detectors installed in every property and gas appliance safety devices in all properties where access is a problem.
Judges comments were: a good example of a firm commitment to improving gas safety procedures plus the development of new and reliable ways to achieve this through customer focus groups.
NHIC director, Graham Ponting, says: “The number of entries for this award were significantly higher this year and and the competition was stronger. The finalists are obviously organisations which take their gas safety responsibilties very seriously and have applied some clever thinking in their approaches to managing gas safety.”
Renfrewshire Council also won the Projects Which Have Made Significant Contributions To The Elimination Of Fuel Poverty Award and was a runner-up in the Local Authorities and Housing Associations Best Value In Window Replacement award.
