Work with politicians to raise the profile of gas safety issues continues apace with the announcement that CORGI is launching a joint campaign with Nigel Griffiths MP, Minister for Small Business and Construction, aimed at students in his Edinburgh South constituency.
The campaign, which will be launched in March, aims to raise awareness amongst students of the duty that landlords have to ensure that a gas safety check is undertaken by a CORGI-registered installer on every appliance they own. Campaign methods will include e-mailing 20,000 students, launching a text message survey to gauge whether landlords are fulfilling their duties and distributing a gas safety leaflet containing key gas safety messages.
Commenting on the campaign, Mike Thompson said, “Nigel has long been a champion of gas safety issues and this campaign provides a great opportunity for us to work with him to raise awareness amongst students – a group who can be particularly at risk from poorly maintained gas appliances.”
Nigel Griffiths announced the campaign at a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group in the House of Commons, saying, “CORGI does a great job in promoting awareness but I believe that Members of Parliament can also play a valuable role. Knowledge of basic gas safety tips could be the difference between life and death. I hope that my campaign will help improve awareness amongst students in Edinburgh and, hopefully, it will provide a model that other MPs can follow.”
Nigel Griffiths’ interest in gas safety stems from the experience he has gained from working as a constituency MP in an area with one of the highest student populations in the UK. In his capacity as Small Business Minister he is also keen to ensure that legitimate gas installers are not undercut by illegal non-registered installers. |
