Minister praises CORGI registered installers

Date: 02/03/04 Author: Press Office

CORGI registered installers have been praised for reflecting the high standards expected of the gas industry, by Minister for Small Business and Construction, Nigel Griffiths MP.

The Minister was addressing fellow MPs’ and key industry figureheads at the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group meeting, held at the House of Commons last month.

He said: “CORGI is the premier group in gas safety and high standards and CORGI registered installers exemplify these higher standards. It’s critical that standards are maintained and that CORGI ensures that this happens.”

Mr Griffiths also stated his intention to promote the trade as a valid and lucrative career path. He said: “I want construction and allied trades such as gas, to be the first choice of career for school leavers. It offers great opportunities for young people.”

The meeting was a chance for members of the All Party Gas Safety Group and other gas safety stakeholders, to discuss and update each other on issues affecting gas safety.

CORGI CEO Mike Thompson, who made his first public appearance at the meeting, took the opportunity to pledge his commitment to gas safety.

He said: “Legitimate installers will benefit from a mandatory registration scheme because, if run effectively, it will protect the reputation of the trade and safeguard legitimate installers from the activities of unscrupulous counterparts who may otherwise undercut them.
”I want to stress my commitment to maintaining and improving the registration scheme as the bedrock of everything that CORGI does. On top of this we will continue to be a proactive watchdog, constantly seeking to raise awareness about gas safety issues and looking to highlight problems and work with third parties to solve them in a constructive way.”

Jon Trickett MP, founder and Chair of the All Party Gas Safety Group, himself a former builder, plumber and gas installer said: “The All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group has been working closely with CORGI to both raise public and parliamentary awareness of gas safety and ensure that ministers take account of gas safety considerations when developing policy.

“A recent example of this is the work we have been doing with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister on the Housing Bill. I’m very grateful to CORGI for its’ support and advice on this work.”
