Efforts to warn consumers of the dangers of CO poisoning received a boost when Ministers and voluntary sector safety campaigners teamed up with the All Party Parliamentary Gas Safety Group to endorse CORGI’s latest high-profile awareness campaign.
The campaign, which was launched at the Labour Party Conference, aims to encourage students to demand their legal right to be shown a valid gas safety certificate by their landlord. Speaking at the launch, Nigel Griffiths MP, the Minister for Small Business and Construction praised the work of CORGI and gas installers in raising the profile of gas safety amongst political audiences. However, he also set out an ambitious challenge: that stakeholders should strive to exceed Government targets, reducing the numbers of fatalities caused by CO poisoning from 30 each year to none.
Representing Shelter, the leading housing safety charity, Sue Regan pledged her support for further efforts to tackle landlords and owner-occupiers who endanger lives by failing to adequately maintain gas appliances by using a CORGI-registered installer. Jon Trickett MP, who chaired the event, pledged the continued support of the All Party Gas Safety Group in raising awareness and securing changes to the law to boost safety.
Much of the debate focused on new figures released by CORGI showing that, although awareness about key gas safety messages was reasonably high, this awareness was often not translated into action. Speaking for CORGI, Chief Executive Mike Thompson pledged to lead the effort to address this issue, also vowing to continue to adapt the registration scheme to maximise safety and promote the interests of registered installers and consumers alike.
Jon Trickett MP: pledged his continued support.
