New Government changes to electrical work carried out in the home in England and Wales

Date: 06/01/05 Author: CORGI

The Government have introduced new rules on carrying out electrical work in the home in England and Wales in an effort to reduce the number of deaths, injuries and fires caused by faulty electrical installations.

The changes mean that from 1st January 2005, any person carrying out electrical work in residential dwellings must be competent to do so, as required by Approved Document P for Building Regulations.

For information on how to demonstrate competence, please see the article on page 6 of January’s Gas Installer or visit www.corgi-gas.com.

In addition to being competent, certain areas of electrical work must be either notified to the relevant local authority Building Control Department or notified through a competent person who is registered with a Part P Self-Certification Scheme.

Details of notifiable electrical work, relevant to Registered Gas installers can also be found in January’s Gas Installer.

CORGI will be running a Part P Self-Certification Scheme for Gas Installers from 1st April 2005. Installers will have the opportunity to join the scheme through the renewals process.

Any gas installers carrying out notifiable electrical work prior to joining a Part P Self-Certification Scheme will need to contact the relevant local authority Building Control Department before commencing the work.

Further information regarding the changes is available from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) by calling 020 7944 4400 or by visiting www.odpm.gov.uk.
