In
order to help installers meet the requirement of Building Regulations
and allow them to legally undertake the relevant areas of electrical
work, CORGI has set up a Part P Self Certification Scheme from 1
st April 2005.
Because this area of work
is outside the scope of the Gas Registration Scheme, the CORGI Part
P Scheme will operate as a voluntary scheme, alongside the Gas Registration
Scheme.
However, installers who
choose to join the CORGI Part P Scheme will benefit from the ability
to notify electrical work at the same time as gas work, therefore
saving both time and money.
The CORGI Part P Scheme
begins on 1st April 2005. Any gas installers carrying out notifiable
electrical work prior to joining a Part P Self-Certification
Scheme will need to contact the relevant Local Building
Control Department before commencing the work.
Further information regarding
the changes is available from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
(ODPM) by calling 020 7944 4400 or by visiting www.odpm.gov.uk
.
Installers who wish to
join the CORGI Part P Self Certification Scheme must have
‘Opted in' to Part J and Part L under the Gas Registration
Scheme.
The CORGI Part P Scheme
is a defined scope scheme, which covers electrical installation
work in residential dwellings, carried out as a consequence of other
gas work. Therefore, the CORGI Part P Scheme is currently only open
to CORGI Registered Installers, or electrical operatives who work
for a CORGI Registered business.
Notification of the electrical
installation work (carried out in conjunction with gas work), must
be carried out by the commissioning operative.
Under Part P, there are
three levels of work. The CORGI scheme will cover the requirement
to notify work carried out at levels B and C only.
(Link to table with type
of work).
How to join the
CORGI Part P Self Certification Scheme
Installers can join the
CORGI Part P Scheme by contacting CORGI Customer Services on 0870
401 2300 and requesting a Part P application Pack.
The Registration fee to
join the CORGI Part P Scheme is £170 per business (this includes
the cost of inspection) and an initial assessment fee of £200.
Any gas installers
carrying out notifiable electrical work prior to joining a Part
P Self-Certification Scheme will need to contact the relevant Local
Building Control Department before commencing the work.
